Brazil applies import duties as well as a wide range of indirect taxes on import and local transactions. Generally, export transactions are not subject to taxes. Products imported and /or circulated in Brazil are essentially subject to the following taxes. •Import Duties •Federal value-added tax (IPI) •Social Contributions PIS and COFINS •State value-added tax (ICMS) •Municipal Services Tax (ISS)

According to TDC Research, the Brazilian authorities announced on 27 December 2013 the addition of 248 items to a list of foreign capital goods and information technology and telecommunications goods that benefit from reduced duty or duty-free treatment under the Ex-Tarifario regime. Of this total, 237 items are capital goods and the remaining 11 are IT and telecom goods.

Classified in HS Chapters 73, 84, 85, 86, 87, 89 and 90, the capital goods will benefit from a reduced duty of two percent through 31 December 2014, with the exception of one product classified under NCM 8426.30.00 that will enjoy that treatment through 30 June 2014.

The IT/telecom goods, which are classified under NCM 8517.62.32, 8517.62.49, 8517.62.59, 8528.51.20 and 8530.10.10, will benefit from a reduced duty of two percent through 31 December 2014. As is customarily the case, these duty reductions will not apply to used, remanufactured and reconditioned goods.
