I'd like to know the procedures of importing used furniture to Shanghai rep. office. What is the restriction, the import duties, etc? What about importing electrical office equipment such as copier, fax machine, & typewriter? What documents do we need to prepare?

In usual cases, foreign invested enterprises are allowed to import equipment, materials and raw materials for own use without having to obtain prior approval. However, they cannot sell these equipment and materials in the domestic market or to other enterprises. The import duty for furniture is 3.7% in 2004, whereas that for most office equipment is zero percent. Value added tax at 17% will also be applied. Usual trade documents are required, including invoice, bill of lading, packing list etc.
