I would like to know what the procedures are for me to import large speakers with built in amplifiers from China to USA/Canada. These speakers are approx 30inch - 60 inch large, and worth over US$2000. |

There are no special requirements for imports of the mentioned goods into the US. Import licence is not necessary and normal trade documents e.g. commercial invoice, bill of lading, packing list are required. Import duties for the speakers (HS 8518.21) are charged at 4.9% on the customs value for imports from China and other MFN¡¦s. You should however note that importation will be refused admission if it (a) fails to comply with an applicable product safety standard or regulation or with a specified labeling or certification requirement, or (b) is determined to present a substantial product hazard. These requirements are administered by t he Consumer Product Safety Commission. |

Duties into the US can be complicated depending on the product, country of origin, etc. In addition, there are constant and additions, changes and restrictions which can be near impossible to keep up with. This new system http://www.tariffpro.com makes it easy with an instant report of import duties. |

I need to find what I will need to pay for about $100,000 worth of toys from Hong Kong. ~10000 pounds worth of product in a 20 foot container. More specifically they are story books that come with a cartridge that plays in a projector. I am not importing the projector, just the book with plastic slide cartridge. |

According to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in addition to duty and possible excise tax, goods imported into the United States are subject to user fees. The user fee and amount collected by CBP depends on the type of entry and mode of transportation used to bring the goods into the United States. For instance, formal and informal entries are subject to a Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF). The MPF for formal entries is an ad valorem fee of 0.21 percent. The maximum amount of the fee shall not exceed $485 and shall not be less than $25. For example, .21 percent of $950,000.00 is $1,995.00, but the importer is only required to pay the maximum amount of $485.00. The fee is based on the value of the merchandise being imported, not including duty, freight, and insurance charges. MPF for informal entries (i.e. goods imported via mail etc.) is a set fee and ranges from $5.00 to $9.00 per shipment. |

for Didi 31 Mar: The US import duty rates can run as high as 16% for garments imports from countries which have normal trade relations with the US. The abbreviated CA appear in the special rates column does not denote ¡¥California¡¦ but Canada, meaning imports from Canada of the specified products can enjoy duty free preferences under the US and Canada Free Trade Agreement. Imports of garments from Hong Kong are rated under the general tariff system in column 1 of the US Import Tariff Schedule. |

As required by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), you need to lodge a declaration on the goods you bring into the country. Whether or not you are eligible for an exemption will depend on your status, the country you are coming from, how long you were there, what you purchased or received, the country the goods were made in, and the price paid for the goods. Therefore, it is important that you have proof of purchase (i.e. invoice, receipt or bill of sale, etc.) This will make declaring your goods easier and give the CBP officer an idea of how much was paid for the goods and whether they are eligible for an exemption or reduced duty rate. |

Hi. I just bought a costume through an online store based in Hong Kong, and it's being delivered by UPS to my home here in Salt Lake. According to the seller it takes 5-7 business days. As it is a costume, (i.e. clothes), most likely one package, I'd like to know what/how much I'd be paying on it. Thanks. |

for George 19 July: There are other taxes and fees that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) collects on goods being imported into the US. In addition to duty and possible excise tax, goods imported into the United States are subject to user fees. The user fee and amount collected by CBP depends on the type of entry and mode of transportation used to bring the goods into the US. The fee is based on the value of the merchandise being imported, not including duty, freight, and insurance charges. Moreover import of clothes into the US is subject to licensing control, and import duty can range from 7.5% to 27.3% depending on types and materials used. |
