According to TDC's Business Alert – China, beginning from the first half of 2004, permanent residents of Hong Kong and Macau can freely register to operate jewellery business in Guangzhou in the form of sole ownership or joint venture. Business scope includes production, processing, retail and wholesale. As taxation is the major factor affecting the development of the industry, the Guangzhou Gold Jewellery Association is proposing to the Government department concerned to abolish the consumption tax on jewellery, currently charged at 5% on the retailer.
